Wrestling Radio Podcast

I'm a little surprised no one's made a feedback topic for DiRT's WGR Podcast, so, "whether you like it or not," I'm starting one!
http://vglosers.dirtmound.com/article.php?story=20090407122138666
As for responses/thoughts:
- I am in agreement about Vickie Guerrero. She is THE best heel in company, IMO. Main reason? Other heels, even ones as dastardly as Edge & Orton, still having their cheering sections, no matter how deplorable their actions are. When Vicki comes out, there is seemingly not a single person in the building who is not loudly booing her.
- Did anyone else think that Punk was going to turn heel right after the 10-man? I was so certain that the faces would win and as they were all celebrating, Punk was going to smack Cena in the back of the head w/the case, hand it to the ref, and demand a 3 count. Of course, as soon as the announcers made mention of that possibility, I knew it wouldn't happen, but up until then, I was so sure.
- I am also in 100% agreement about Santino. Part of what makes Santino so great, IMO, is that there is NOTHING so stupid that he is not willing to do. Some of the ways you see him humiliate himself, you will not see out of another wrestler as long as you live. He's comfortable w/the character he plays, he has no problem coming across as weak or stupid, he's just freaking magnificent.

Several years ago, I managed a tag team that had the gimmick of being college frat boys who just liked to get drunk and fight. I decided that my character was going to become and alcoholic and come out drunk with them, act cowardly when confronted, and even fake vomited one night during a show. People thought it was hilarious and it went over well with the crowd, even though they knew they still had to hate me and boo me. Someone asked me if I felt like a goof for doing it since wrestling is all about being tough, and I was like: "No one is doing what I'm doing and people respect the fact that I entertain them. What do i care about looking tough?" I feel that Santino is in that same boat.

Ricky Steamboat was awsome once again on Monday night....and really went over well with the crowd. Glad they went with him in the tag match.

It was also nice that he got that moment at the end to celebrate with the crowd.

See, now that's awesome!
This is why I've never understood the belt/spotlight hogs who are marks for themselves. They're totally forgetting/ignoring the fact that it's all about entertainment and is not an actual competitive sport. They also seem to forget/ignore the fact that they have a championship belt due to the decision of a company, not b/c they actually competed for it and won.

Oh, and Steamboat was awesome. Aside from not being able to get quite as high on the dropkicks (which is understandable considering how long he's been retired), the guy has not missed a beat. Plus, let him wrestle a few more matches and I bet it will come back to him.
I wonder if they smell enough money for an eventual DVD set?

I'm not sure what was sadder about his last match in 1994: The fact that a magnificent wrestler was retiring or the fact that within a couple of minutes the U.S. Championship had gone from Steamboat to Steve Austin to Jim Duggan...

I'm in agreement w/DiRT on the latest WGR Podcast for the 5/4/09 RAW. That was one of the most rancid episodes I've ever seen of the show.
- Fewer things expose the business more than having a non-wrestler like Shane not only take on 3 of your top tier wrestlers, but come off looking better than Batista or MVP. My wife isn't a wrestling fan, but she saw this in passing, and stated that there's no way "that guy who isn't a wrestler" can beat those 3 (Legacy).
- I may get a lot of flack for saying this, but Santino's face turn is possibly the beginning of the end for him being the show stealer. IMO, comedic heels often become a lot less funny once they turn face (Jericho in the late 90s, Eric Young, Jerry Lawler, etc). I'm not saying this is always the case, as it's not like they necessarily become boring, but, I mean, can you imagine what it would be like if Bobby Heenan had stopped addressing us as humanoids? I really hope I'm wrong here...
- Nothing else really to comment on as the rest of the show ranged from bland to awful. If it weren't for MVP, I doubt I would watch Raw at this point.

Yeah, I spent Raw being board and angry. I even fell asleep during the Women's match all the way through the Batista match. I am sick of seeing Shane. I am sick of being reminded constantly that Orton kicked the McMahon's in the head. It's all so old and overdone by this point.
Santino cracked me up, though. "Oooh, Chavo!" great stuff. And the reference to Vickie having Swine Flu ...becuase she's Mexican, without ever actually saying that......great stuff!

I understand what you are saying About Santino. And I agree that part of the problem is that he can be a d!ck when he's a heel and that's OK, but doesn't translate as well as a face. But if they can keep him as the @$$#ole you love, then it'll be fine.

If the next Raw is this bad, DiRT should "draft" himself to Smackdown and make that the weekly podcast!
As I said, if MVP hadn't moved to Raw, SD would likely be the only wrestling show I watch.

With any luck, I can get Smackdown on Thursday nights and do the podcast on Friday mornings!

Just a quick question about Episode 19 (which I really enjoyed btw. I'm glad you're covering Smackdown now). At about the 25:36 mark in the podcast, you mentioned that Matt Hardy had come down and interfered in the Jeff Hardy/Edge match on Friday. However, I just watched the match again and while I know Matt Hardy interfered at the PPV, there was no Matt Hardy on Friday night. Since you said you got a New Zealand satellite feed, I'm just curious if Matt's interference was edited out of the U.S. broadcast.
Seriously, I promise I'm not trying to be a smart Aleck, I'm just honestly wondering, as I've heard tell of this kind of editing before.

No, you're right. I typed the wrong name in my notes and when I read it I didn't think it was right, yet it was in my notes, so I just ran with it. Oh well, what can you do?
